SUMMARY:Scottish Winter Trip to the Cairngorm
DESCRIPTION:Staying at Aviemore SYHA Map ref OS 36 (GR893119) telephone no: 01479 810 345 email: aviemore@syha.org.uk \n  \nPlans are to climb in Coire an t-Sneachda\, Coire na Lochain and Hell’s Lum (to name a few) – there are plenty of Grade 1 and 2 climbs\, so good introductory climbs and lots to push the grade. Some big Grade 3\, 4 and 5s as well\, so good stuff for the bold. The walk-ins are quite easy\, a drive up to Cairngorm car park\, then about 1 to 2 hour walk in on reasonably easy ground for the nearest routes. \nThe hostel has kitchens and you can bring your own food. Plenty of shops in Aviemore to buy food if you need to. The Skiing Doo is the cheap bar/restaurant we will go to during the trip and we normally finish off with a big night out at one of the hotel restaurants on the last night (Tuesday). \nSomething for everyone but there is a focus for those who are planning a first trip to the Alps (watch out for that) to get some ice axe and crampon practice in… and maybe some crevasse rescue practice too\, if it doesn’t get in the way of climbing… \nPlease get in touch with Jim if you want to go and he may be able to sort some kit. Winter climbing equipment can be hired from Ellis Brigham in Aviemore https://www.ellis-brigham.com/stores/aviemore. \nLikewise\, any Danes interested (you should be) then please get in touch with Jim. He will coordinate airport collection and drop-off if possible.

SUMMARY:Grit for Christmas 2021
DESCRIPTION:Arrive Friday 17th December late in the evening. Meet up early at the crag (we’ll decide this on Friday when we know the weather) early and chase the grades and the routes. Climb Saturday and repeat Sunday before the drive home…\nStaying in Edale so the usual haunts means the Eastern Gritstone edges… Stanage\, Burbage\, Froggatt and Curber\, Gardom’s and Birchen. If time and weather permit\, then maybe get some bouldering in too. For those who prefer sport and limestone\, the quarries around Stony are not too far away. There are enough circular routes and pubs for those who prefer to go for a walk. I am hoping to convince a few of the Manchester or Nottingham crowd out for the day but if you are keen for a longer stay\, please get in touch with Jim. \nAccommodation and Food:\nStaying at Newfold Farm in Edale and the link is HERE . Cheap and fine… There are shops in Hathersage to buy food and a small outlet at the campsite. A few garages on the drive in have reasonable supplies. We’ll probably eat at the pub over the road on Friday and Saturday night. Bring your own is an option for the campsite. \nTransport and Travel:\nCar is easiest but Edale is on the main train line between Manchester and Sheffield… campsite is a 10 minute walk from the train station. \nVenue for the map:\nGrindsbrook Booth\, Edale\, Hope Valley S33 7ZD

SUMMARY:Portland Bill DWS Trip
DESCRIPTION:Come and make the most of the sunny south coast in the middle of summer! \nIf you’ve never tried DWS then Portland is a great spot to start. Access to the routes is easy\, grades go down to sport 4+\, and there are plenty of short routes over very deep water (including several traverses where you’re only just off the surface). Add to this high tides through the middle of the day\, on both days and it’s like bouldering with a large\, blue\, splashy mat! \nFor those who want to push things a little harder\, there are safe 3-star routes all through the grades\, up to 7b+ (!). \nAccommodation is within walking distance of the crag and if the sea state is not suitable for DWS there are plenty of sport climbing\, walking and (rocky) beach options in the area\, as well as trad. and other DWS options within an hour’s drive. \n  \nThe Plan \nMeet up at the accommodation on Friday night (although those who live closer are welcome to join us on Saturday morning). Climb Saturday and Sunday\, before heading home Sunday afternoon / evening. \nThere are a large number of routes and grades at Portland Bill\, so two days will give us plenty of time to explore. DWS is very much like bouldering\, short intense bursts interspaced with chatting / recovering\, so there will be plenty of time for swimming\, paddle boarding and eating ice creams! There is also plenty of sport climbing in the area\, if you want to mix it up. \n  \nWhat to bring \nSwimmers\, large beach towel\, small hand towel\, optional wetsuit\, liquid chalk\, climbing shoes\, waterproof sun lotion\, anything else you want for the beach (i.e. paddle board\, snorkel\, etc.) \n  \nServices \nThere is a supermarket on Portland\, as well as plenty of pubs and takeaways. Portland Bunkhouse also has a kitchen and a BBQ area. \nAccommodation \nLilla and I will be staying in the Portland Bunkhouse (http://www.portlandbunkhouse.com/index.php). At £17 per night and walking distance to the crag (as well as several sport climbing crags)\, what’s not to like?! \nFor those who would rather camp\, there is a basic campsite just up the road\, at Sweet Hill Farm (https://www.pitchup.com/campsites/England/South_West/Dorset/Portland/sweet-hill-farm/?type=4) \n  \nFood \nIf the weather allows then I will be making full use of the bunkhouse’s BBQ area on the Saturday night! There is also a fully equipped kitchen and plenty of takeaways and pubs. \nTransport \nCar is by far the easiest way to both get to Portland and around it. However\, the nearest station is just over the causeway in Weymouth and so (if Covid allows) we could organise a pickup from there. \n  \nDetails \nStart: 30/31 July \nEnd: 01 August \nOrganisers: Will & Lilla Beaumont \nVenue: Portland Bunkhouse (DT5 2JT) & the cliffs near the Lobster Pot takeaway (DT5 2JT)

SUMMARY:David Judge’s Over The Moors Trip
DESCRIPTION:Itinerary:  \n  A venture onto the Kinder Plateau to search out some forgotten Gritstone… this may be a day out from Nottingham or Manchester or weekend visit for those further afield… Who knows? The whole trip is really to justify the Club buying the ‘Over the Moors’ guidebook by Martin Kocsis. Plans to meet up at Edale at 09:00 on Saturday 05.06.2021. We will make plans on the day. Possible venues may include: Upper Tor\, Nether Tor or The Woolpacks. If the weather is that bad\, then we might just go for a walk\, though Kinder Downfall might go in the rain? \n  As this trip was planned in January 2020\, there were no booking opportunities… best if people make their own plans… Climb Saturday and maybe try and find something to do Sunday before the trip home for those who have a longer commute.  \nServices:  \nNot as many card machines as you think in the Peak… so bring cash. Especially so for the car parks\, as they need coinage and don’t take change… Trail food available in Edale… or bring your own.  \nFood:  \nSee accommodation but plenty of pub options… you only need to ask.  \nAccommodation:  \nNothing can be booked this early… this trip was planned in January 2020… Contact David or Jim and you might get some up to date considerations… or you may just visit for the day…  \nTransport:  \nYou will probably arrive by car… There is a large carpark (bring lots of coins) in Edale. Trains from Manchester or Sheffield run regular and early… aim for Edale Station.

Please let Jim know that you are booking so that he can add you to our risk assessment.\nAfter last year’s AGM\, we are all super excited! Plans this year include camping so we have posted the dates a little later… for those who like the comfort. Head home Sunday. With current rules\, it is worth planning early so all members can make plans and seek to join. Hopefully\, camping will make social distancing easier if required. \nAs ever\, an agenda will be posted by the Vice President\, President and Secretary at least one month before. If you wish to add anything\, then please raise this as early as possible. Then\, your views or discussion points will be included. \n  \nAccommodation: We’ve chosen camping as it makes it easier to socially distance… however\, there are camper options and teepees available for those who want more comfort. Please book early! We are camping at Newfold Farm campsite in Edale. \nNewfold Farm Campsite Grindsbrook Booth Edale Hope Valley Derbyshire S33 7ZD \nT: 01433 670401 \nE: campsite@newfoldfarmedale.com \nW: www.newfoldfarmedale.com \nGrid reference: SK122855 \n  \nFood: Bring your own… there is a small shop and a very good takeaway pizza oven on the campsite\, and these may be open for our visit. Updates to follow \n  \nServices: Bank machines in Chesterfield and Buxton on the roads in… bring cash and card. Small shops in Hathersage. Probably best to get what you need before arriving… \n  \nTransport: Car is best… Otherwise\, arrive at Edale by train (walking distance from campsite) or Hathersage by bus from Manchester or Sheffield and we will pick you up if you give us enough time to coordinate. Those travelling from Denmark\, this is the trip not to be missed\, and many of you haven’t! Contact Jim and he will try to coordinate lifts (if allowed) or direct you to the best airports… Probably Manchester (currently SAS and Easyjet) or Birmingham (currently SAS). If conditions allow\, Jim can pick you up Thursday night in Bristol (Easyjet) and will coordinate departure if you get in touch! Good luck! \nOrganiser: Jim McCall

SUMMARY:Dartmoor Bouldering and Trad
DESCRIPTION:Meet up Saturday morning at 09:00 and walk over to Smallacombe Rocks. Spend the morning bouldering and then back to the cars for a short drive round to Haytor and some classic Trad. If staying over\, then options to take in some of the classic trad on the Tors or checkout bouldering around Bovey Tracey\, on the road back east… \nServices:\nBovey Tracey has banks and shops and is a convenient stop off on the way over the Moors… Bovey is the self-appointed ‘Gateway of the Moors’ and will provide all the necessaries… \nAccommodation:\nSome of those in the South West may treat this as an extended day trip but for those that want to stay over…\nSaying that\, none of the campsites are open until April so it’s a case of find somewhere on the drive in or wild camp… which is allowed on Dartmoor. SUMMARY:Now that’s what I call a Corona Christmas walk
DESCRIPTION:[DATE CHANGED]\nIn order to respect Tier 3 travel restrictions currently in place\, this year ‘Ye Olde Christmas Walke’ will leave its traditional home in the Peak district and take place in neighbouring Nottinghamshire on Sunday 27th December. Unfortunately\, restrictions also mean that this year’s walk is only open to members who are local residents. \nTo make sure everyone attending can enjoy the day safely\, we’ll be organising the trip in line with the COVID-19 guidance for organised groups’ walks. We will ask participants to sign up for the walk in advance and you’ll be asked to follow some key steps before\, during and afterwards to ensure we are following government guidance. These steps will be shared directly with registered attendees ahead of the walk\, along with the risk assessment. \nOur route is still to be confirmed\, but we’re aiming for a good ten miler to flatten the Christmas Curve. Kings\, stars\, donkeys and gold will abound! \nFor more information and to register your attendance\, please contact the walk leader Alison Sail. \nAccommodation:\nIt’s a day trip only… you are staying local and going home. \nFood:\nPlease bring everything you need and do not rely on visiting local services. \nTransport:\nCars are the new eco-option… but please follow rules about individual travel. You cannot travel in a car with a person not in your bubble. \nOther:\nPlease read the risk assessment before the day. \nDate: 27.12.2020. \nOrganisers: Alison Sail

SUMMARY:Dan’s Alpine trip to the Ecrins 2020 (CANCELED)
DESCRIPTION:Join Dan and Jim to a trip to Aliefroide in the Ecrins for alpine\, sport\, bouldering and hiking… Something for everyone. Plan to arrive Saturday and stay at the campsite. Walk up to the hut on Sunday morning for glacier practice and then a Monday ascent. Stay at the hut Monday and get a second summit in from the same hut on the Tuesday\, before descending back to the campsite for R & R. \nWednesday\, Thursday and Friday can be for sport climbing and bouldering. Aliefroide has an abundance of single pitch and multi-pitch bolted routes\, which are accessible walking from the campsite. The inevitable bouldering is available throughout the valley. \nThere is already some interest to this trip and members looking to have a first alpine experience should contact Jim early on\, so coverage is guaranteed. There is kit to arrange and/or buy and there are crevasse rescue techniques which need mastering before departure. Planned routes will be non-technical Facile (easy) graded summits between 3300m to 3600m with glacial approach and some easy rockwork. There are more challenging summits also available. Experienced members may wish to operate as an independent team of two and arrange their own objectives. \nIn addition\, there are plenty of walking trails to keep anyone busy for a week. The Club will seek to buy a map of the area. Again\, get in touch early so that we can pair members up to like activities. \nAccommodation: \nStaying at the campsite in Aliefroide. The website for the campsite is http://www.ailefroide.fr/camping/ and includes rates… currently just over €7.00 a night. Plans to stay in the Glacier Blanc hut for the summit bids and the website is here https://refugeduglacierblanc.ffcam.fr/home.html Opportunity to book places on the website will become available. \nServices: \nAliefroide has basic services\, some shops and some eateries… best to arrive with the essentials. Most places take cards but some do insist on cash. Everyone will travel through Briancon on the way so wise to stop off there if you need anything. \nTravel: \nFly to Grenoble and then a three hour drive to the campsite. There will be a need to hire cars so arrange this with others please. Do not just expect there to be a space reserved for you. Once at the campsite\, all rock climbing is a walk away. The hour walk up to the valley head and carpark to walk up to the hut is an easy hitch hike if we want to leave the car at the tents. \nMeet: \nAim to be at the campsite Saturday 15.08.2020.

SUMMARY:Hound Tor or Bust
DESCRIPTION:Join some of the Southern Set for a day (or possibly two) out at Hound Tor for bouldering and trad.\nWith any luck\, we might be able to stay over and climb Sunday. Currently\, the group stands at 4 and\nwe can have 6… though that might change too. If a second group ventures here we will keep our\ndistance and wave. \nPlenty of easy to access bouldering and lots of trad at introductory to intermediate grades\, so\nenough to go at. A reasonable place to learn to lead if you need to build the mileage. Easy access\nand only 5 minutes from the car. Good walking in the area for those who prefer a stroll.\nIf you are interested\, then please contact Jim and he will coordinate. Hope to see you there. \nAccommodation and food \nBring your own (food and tent)! Clip it!) to Trad Master (I’ve just led Yellow Slab with 2 nuts and a sling!)… You will need to operate as an independent team to join us on this trip as we are determined to tick off some key routes and may have Andrew joining us on the rope already. \nItinerary: \nI am meeting Lorenz late on Thursday night with a view to head to Snowdonia early Friday morning… routes include some Classic Rock on Tryfan and the big link up routes on LLliwedd. We plan to climb Friday and Saturday and will probably camp. \nIf the weather is too bad\, then we will follow the best chances we can find… \nDepart on Sunday\, hopefully a stop off at Cheddar Gorge (can’t let him miss that!) before lunch and then drop Lorenz at Bristol Airport. \nServices: Bethesda and Betws y Coed have all you need… either road into the National Park. \nFood: If we are camping\, then carry your own food and we eat in the pubs at night. \nAccommodation: Bring a tent… \nTransport: Bring a car and a climbing friend!

SUMMARY:The AGM 2020
DESCRIPTION:A chance to push your grade on trustworthy Gritstone or wonder what you were thinking on polished Peak limestone\, trad at Stanage\, sport climbing at Horseshoe Quarry and bouldering opportunities all over the place (possibly in the rain\, just like last year)\, plenty of walking over the tops and enough activities to keep children and adults happy\, away from the outdoors\, if that’s what you need … so\, something for everyone.  \nPlans to climb trad and sport\, to boulder and walk\, throughout the weekend. Generally\, groups start arguing where they are going a couple of weeks before the trip\, so feel free to join in with that… Too much to climb or walk within a stone’s throw of the hut\, so no need to list local crags\, there is enough to go at…  \nSaturday night is the AGM and then a meal at the local to encourage us to stop talking and just eat and drink. If you have any proposals for discussion\, then let Che know\, by email\, and he will include it on the Agenda… posted at least one month before. It’s always a popular trip and this year\, Che has promised to give out more mug awards than ever before… It could be you! \nServices: Shops and other services on the road in either in Chesterfield\, Manchester or Sheffield. Plenty of services in the Peak. Cash machines surprisingly rare so have cash or card… Chip shop in Stoney and garage 10 minutes up the road.  \nTravel: Easy to get to… follow the link. Cars generally travelling from Nottingham\, Manchester and the South West… talk to others if you want to arrange a list. For those who may travel in from abroad\, fly into Bristol\, Manchester or East Midlands and contact Jim\, and he will attempt to coordinate lifts… (Bristol is easiest for Jim\, but others may help!). \nAccommodation:  Carlswark Cottage at Stoney Middleton\, the Club hut for the Derbyshire Pennine Club… details and directions at http://www.thedpc.co.uk/hut . The hut is booked from Friday to Sunday and there are limited spaces… so book early!  \nFood: Jim and Andrew will organise dinner Friday night\, breakfast Saturday morning\, snacks for the day\, breakfast again on Sunday… We plan to eat out at the local pub on Saturday night (you pay for this outside of the £30.00)… An email will be sent out asking for your dinner order\, closer to the time (Thanks Andrew!).  \nCost: £30.00 for the weekend… food (as above) and accommodation included. To guarantee your place… Please pay Jim on the usual membership account details. Then email Jim to conform payment and intention.  \n

SUMMARY:Somerset Spring Trip 2020
DESCRIPTION:Probably arrive at lunchtime to avoid the morning high tide… and plans to approach the red slab area on Brean (Fort Crags). For some it may be a first trip out so we will be climbing in areas offering some good introductory routes. The cliffs here are 10-12m high and are reasonably furnished with holds. A good introduction to trad climbing and a chance to get out on a new venue for the Club.  \nPlans to spend a finishing hour over at Cheddar Gorge. Probably attempt a few sport routes on Arch Rock… the plan to give Jake a chance to practice some sport climbing before we head out to France in the Summer. \nServices: Shops on the road through Weston. \nFood: Bring your own today. \nAccommodation: One day only! \nTransport: Jim driving from the Chew Valley… \n

Benign climate and massive amount of rock available. Cliffs available vary from tiny roadside buttresses\, to long multi-pitch full-day trad routes and ridges (you are better of bringing a small rack for the longer routes\, and ridges). \nClimbing area/ routes / Rockfax / walking  \nThere is climbing for everyone\, every grade\, (mainly sport routes) check out the link and become inspired where you would like to go for adventure :). Accomidation is in Finestrat\, Costa Blanca \nhttps://www.rockfax.com/databases/results_area.html?id=1012 (Note Sella 317 no of routes and sierra de toix 222 no of routes in driving distance from the Orange house where we will be living) I have the Rockfax 2013 guidebook with me on the trip \nDownload mini guides \nhttp://costablancaclimbing.co.uk/mini-guides/ \nIf you want nature then head inland and you will be blown away by the views. Take a drive and you will think you have stepped back in time and take a strill around the villages like Orcheta or Sella. The orange house (the accomidation) do have a walking guide book in the office that you are more than welcome to borrow. \nTransport \nI would recommend (almost to say necessary) to rent a car to get around in the area. Once you get to the climbing venue there is a lot of easy short walk in´s to choose. \nBooking accommodation \nThe Orange House is located in Finestrat\, a small village in the mountains behind Benidorm and a 35 minute drive from Alicante Airport. SUMMARY:Thomas's Rjukan 2020 Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join the 2020 Rjukan ice climbing trip. Rjukan offers some of the best European ice climbing. Loads of routes concentrated in the vicinity of Rjukan. It is possible to go skiing at Gaustablik ski resort 30 min drive from the hostel. \nAccommodation: \nRjukan Old School Hostel. I will make reservations for those signed up in the middle of August. I know Jacob who owns the hostel so contact me direct to be included in this booking. Otherwise\, make your own individual booking for the hostel after this time. Address is Rjukan Old School Hostel\, Knut Dahlesvei 31\, 3660 Rjukan\, Norge. \nServices: \nThe hostel has a kitchen and living room. Of course shower\, toilets and sauna. There is a very efficient drying room. The hostel rents out ice axes\, helmets\, crampons and big boots. Get your order in early if you need to. There are shops and banks in Rjukan. Pubs are sparse! Alcohol is sparse and expensive. The Norwegians have very unhealthy alcohol habits! Bring your own if you fancy more than basic beer. \nTravel: \nFlight to Oslo\, Gardamoen Airport\, from there rental cars. Approx 3 hours drive to Rjukan\, but expect winter roads. Don’t fly to the other two Oslo airports as these are hours further from Rjukan. \nFor questions\, please contact Thomas Laursen

SUMMARY:Scottish Winter Trip February 2020
DESCRIPTION:An opportunity to get some traditional Scottish winter climbs in before the race to Rjukan. \nTravel up on Saturday 15th Feb and stay 3 nights\, leaving on Tuesday 18th Feb 2020. \nStaying at Aviemore SYHA Map ref OS 36 (GR893119) telephone no: 01479 810 345 email: aviemore@syha.org.uk \nPlans are to climb in Coire an t-Sneachda\, Coire na Lochain and Hell’s Lum – there are plenty of Grade 1 and 2 climbs\, so good introductory climbs and lots to push the grade. The Skiing Doo is the cheap bar/restaurant we will go to during the trip and we normally finish off with a big night out at one of the hotel restaurants on the last night (Monday). \nSomething for everyone but there is a focus for those who are planning a first trip to the Alps (August trip to the Ecrins) to get some ice axe and crampon practice in… and maybe some crevasse rescue practice too\, if it doesn’t get in the way of climbing…
