SUMMARY:Big Shakeout Festival
DESCRIPTION:Information\n\nThe Big Shakeout is a fun and family-friendly outdoor festival in the heart of the Peak District. Will and I have been going almost yearly since 2012\, and it has never disappointed us to date. Fancy joining us and a few friendly faces from the club this year? There are plenty of activities on site and courses (some for an additional fee) that you might want to sign up to at the weekend\, in case you don’t feel up for climbing. We have tried caving\, outdoor photography\, axe throwing\, white water rafting in the past\, just to mention a few great options. In the evening there is normally fab live music\, outdoor films\, campfire and adventure talks – what’s not to like?\n\nTicket prices are £99/person for the weekend (includes camping\, t-shirt and a range of on-site activities\, plus £15 for camping or £50 for camper vans. Slightly cheaper tickets available for families (up to 5 people for £269) or groups of 4 (£349)\, so it might be worth teaming up. DESCRIPTION:13th-15th September 2024 \n  \nInformation \nAndrew\, Jim\, Keith and Nigel will be heading North for some fun on the rock in Lancashire and Yorkshire. We will arrive on Friday\, staying at the YHA in Ingleton. Saturday will be at Trowbarrow where we’ll find good routes at all grades. We have one particular route in mind. Dress code: denim. Back to Ingleton on Saturday night. There’s lots of other climbing possibilities in the area\, so we could climb on Friday and Sunday as well. Possible crags would be Twistleton Scar or Witches’ Quarry (trad)\, or trad/sport at crags between Ingleton and Settle\, for example at Giggleswick North or Giggleswick South. \n  \nServices \nThere are shops\, pubs\, restaurants and takeaways in Ingleton. SUMMARY:The Roaches and the Don Whillans Memorial Hut August 2024
DESCRIPTION:Information\nClimbing at the Roaches from the conveniently situated Don Whillans Memorial Hut… If you haven’t stayed here you need to and if you have\, then you will want to again. The Roaches offers all grades of climbing for those looking to learn to lead\, for families and for those wanting to push their grades… Reasonable hill walking including the pilgrimage to Lud’s Church for the Luddites… \nServices\nNot a lot actually\, except for a few pubs so you should really bring everything you need with you. We will seek to arrange someone to organise the catering so expect to contribute for dinner Friday night\, breakfast and lunch Saturday (we normally book the Rock Inn Saturday night) and then Sunday breakfast… We will be in touch about this. \nAccommodation\nOne of the best bunkhouses in the Peak… bring a sleeping bag and roll mat as the two rooms provide bare wooden bunks only… There is not a lot of privacy… There is hot running water and two flush toilets\, a lounge with heater\, a drying room (small) and the kitchen\, in the cave. LINK HERE. The Club had its founding meeting here back in 2013\, the last time we attended here as a group. We ave booked the hut out for two nights. Prices are £22.00 for two nights (no single night requests accepted and no refunds). Food contributions may be an additional £10-15.00… Please Contact Jim as soon as possible to book your space as this will probably be oversubscribed. \nFood\nWe will ask for a contribution and provide food for the weekend… we will be in touch about dietary requirements and preferences… The kitchen is quite basic and it is not that practical for everyone to cook for themselves… the shared option is the only way it all works. \nTransport\nCar is the best… Leek is the big smoke down the hill to aim for if you need a lift… get in touch early! \nItinerary\nMeet up at the car park with plans to get some of the classics in… Meet up Friday 30th August and climb Saturday 31st August and leave Sunday 1st September. All of us will be required to spend 30 minutes or so cleaning the hut. SUMMARY:Alpine Trip 2024
DESCRIPTION:Information: You will need to operate as an independent two (or three or four) for this trip. Flights and car travel to the camp site will need to be organised independently. Saying that\, this is a great opportunity to be introduced to a new discipline… And it doesn’t have to feel has hard a Scottish Winter\, so don’t be put off. The summits we have identified are easy and non technical and just require some new skills and techniques to be mastered… skills moving roped together and crevice rescue techniques. We can climb as two or three separate groups\, together on the same route and watch out for each other. If this is for you\, please get in touch with Jim as soon as possible so we can arrange the necessary learning. Experienced alpinists in the Club are also very welcome and there are harder routes to go at if you want… and one of the easier 4000m peaks – The Barre D’Ecrins (4101m)… There are a range of alpine grades on offer and the valley serves 4 huts so there are many options. \nPlans may change with weather and glacier conditions but the plan is to get a couple of summits in from the huts\, heading up Saturday 27th and returning to the valley on Monday or Tuesday… A few days in the valley to rest or to take on any of the numerous sport crags that surround the camp site. I’m booked to fly out of Geneva on Friday lunchtime. \nFor those who have no interest in the summits\, the rock climbing is an attraction in its own right and many come here just to sport climb. There is a developing bouldering scene too. The huts offer good day walk targets and many spend the time walking the hut routes or the valleys. There are also via ferrata routes here. Literally\, something for everyone. \nThere was a Club trip here in 2017… you may want check the photos on the Club Flickr page… \n  \nServices: Alifroide offers a supermarket\, cash machines and restaurants and bars. There are a few kit shops but you really want to bring everything you need with you. Options to hire kit are limited (with the exception of via ferrata). \n  \nAccommodation: The camp site is huge and booking is never a problem… website here https://ailefroide.fr/camping/  It is less than €10 a day per person and they used to do a deal where if you showed them your hut receipt\, then they would refund part of the fee… It is good just to park up and leave the tent all set up. \nFor the huts\, the two most likely used huts are Du Glacier Blanc and Ecrins… \nhttps://refugeduglacierblanc.ffcam.fr/ \nhttps://refugedesecrins.ffcam.fr/ \nCurrently\, there is no facility to book ahead and typically\, this is available early next year… Once we know who is attending and firm up an itinerary\, then we can make a single group booking. \n  \nFood: I generally take some trail food options (because I’m fussy) but the supermarket was good enough last time (2017)… There are enough cheap eating out options in the village for most tastes… \nTransport: The nearest airports are Genoble – 3 hours\, Geneva – 4 hours and Turin (in Italy) about 3 hours if you factor in the drive up and over and possible border chaos for Brexitiers… Hire car to the camp site is probably the obvious solution… \nBA have a LHR to GVA flight available to book now. \n  \nDates: Meet at the camp site (see accommodation) on the evening of Friday 26th July 2024… climbing until Thursday 1st August 2024 and flying out on Friday 2nd August 2024. \n  \nOrganiser: Jim McCall \n

SUMMARY:Stetind & Lofoten
DESCRIPTION:Climb Norway’s national mountain and then spend a week in the climbers and walkers playground that is the Lofoten Isles. \nThis trip is scheduled so that I can meet up with a friend of mine who is working in Lofoten and unfortunately the only week she can get off clashes with Jim’s alpine trip. Although\, there is the option to leave a couple of days early\, to head down to the alps\, and have an epic fortnight of climbing and alpinism! \nIf you would like to join this trip or have any questions then please get in touch!  Due to the cost of car hire it makes most sense to organise people into groups of 4. I’m happy to coordinate linking up individuals or smaller groups\, if needed. \n  \nThe Plan \nFriday the 19th \nFly to Harstad / Narvik Airport (EVE)\, pick up the hire cars\, and drive ~2 hrs to Stetind. Set up camp and try to get some sleep in the midnight sun (eye masks recommended). \nSaturday the 20th & Sunday the 21st \nStetind – Google Maps \nClimb / explore Stetind and the surrounding region. \nStetind has various routes up it\, with the easiest being very achievable. It involves a single pitch of Severe climbing\, some scrambling and some moving together on a rope alpine style.  However\, it is still a big mountain (1394m)\, and you’re starting at sea level so it shouldn’t be underestimated. Hopefully the two days will give us long enough to get a suitable weather window and to recover a bit afterwards! \nFor those who don’t fancy a Severe hand traverse pitch with 600m of exposure\, there are plenty of other climbing options in the area\, as well as lots of walking. \n  \nMonday the 22nd \nTwo ferries and some driving (4-5 hrs total) to get to our accommodation on the Lofoten Islands. We are staying here Forside | Kalle i Lofoten\, but there are other Airbnb options in the area that may work out a bit cheaper if that is your priority. If we’re lucky there will be some time for a bit of climbing at the nearby single pitch crag at the end of the day. \n  \nTuesday the 23rd – Saturday the 27th \nClimb / scramble / walk / kayak\, etc. Lofoten is an amazing place to be for anyone interested in the outdoors! There are innumerable climbing and walking routes\, most of the climbing is multi-pitch and is spread over a range of grades. \n  \nSunday the 22nd \nFly home \n  \nWhat to bring \nStandard camping\, climbing and outdoor gear\, expect daytime temperatures between 10 – 15 degrees and at least some rain. The camping spot at Stetind is beside the car park\, so you won’t have to carry your gear for. We’ll have to pick up stove fuel when we arrive but otherwise try to bring as many supplies as you can\, due to the cost of everything in Norway. If you’ve got space in your luggage then bringing some food could help keep the bills down also\, stock up on duty free! \n  \nServices \nThere is and outdoor shop in Narvik\, about an hour’s drive from Stetind\, and on Lofoten but at Norwegian prices it’s better not to forget anything! \n  \nAccommodation \nWhilst at Stetind we’ll be wild camping (with a stream for water\, and composting toilets). On Lofoten the group so far is staying here; Forside | Kalle i Lofoten but there are also Airbnb’s in the area\, if you’d prefer. \n  \nTransport \nWe are flying into Harstad / Narvik Airport (EVE) as it is the closest and flight prices were reasonable when we looked. We will be on the SAS flight from Oslo that lands at 19:10. \nThere are several other airports within a few hours drive (last time we went to Lofoten we flew to Kiruna in Sweden) but when I last looked\, they weren’t that much cheaper and added a lot of driving. \nA hire car is the best way to get around the area\, there are several car hire companies at the airport.

SUMMARY:Selvaggio Blu – The Wild Blue (Will & Lilla’s Trip)
DESCRIPTION:Selvaggio Blu\nSaturday 29thst April  to Saturday 6th May 2023 \nThis is a big one\, the ‘Wild Blue’\, a 4 to 5 day trek through one of the last pieces of wilderness on the Mediterranean coast and considered one of the best (and hardest) walks in Europe. Along the way there will be beautiful beaches\, scrambling up to grade IV\, several abseils\, jaw-dropping views\, and wild camping every night. Pop it into a Google image search and then get in touch! 😊  \nWe have these dates pencilled in the park authority’s diary\, so they are unlikely to change (again). Permit numbers per day for this walk are restricted and although there is currently good availability this may change. I’m also keen to get organised reasonably early so that we can get decent deals on flights\, accommodation\, etc.\, so please get in touch soon if you want to share these costs!  \nTo limit what we must carry and due to the lack of natural water sources we will be hiring a company to provide food and water drops to us\, at the end of each day. However\, walking will be over rough ground\, with plenty of assent and decent\, whist carrying your bivouac and abseil equipment\, along with food and water for the day\, so a good level of fitness will be required.   \nThere are also lots of other walking and climbing options around Santa Maria Navarresse. So\, this would also be a good opportunity for anyone who would like to visit the surrounding area to either\, stay on after the walk or to do your own thing whilst we are walking and join up with those doing the walk afterwards.  \nIf you would like to join this trip contact me and I will send you a more detailed information pack. Due to the logistics and permit restrictions the number of places in the group is limited\, so if you are keen to join contact me early. That said\, if the trip proves popular\, I would be happy to help someone else organise a second group.  \n\nThe Plan \nSeveral of us will be flying out on Friday the 28th April\, to get a head start on arranging supplies and permits. You’re welcome to join us if you want to split the cost of car hire or feel free to fly out on the Saturday if you want to save a day’s annual leave.   \nFriday the 28th April  \nFly out\, pick up the hire car(s)\, drive to Santa Maria Navarresse.  \nSaturday the 29th April  \nPick up our permits\, buy supplies and drop them off with the logistics company. Anybody not flying out on Friday will have to join the group at some point today.  \nSunday the 30th April – Thursday the 4th May\, walk the Selvaggio Blu!   \nWe are aiming to do the medium length variation of the walk (Santa Maria Navarresse to Cala Sisine) over 5 days\, the daily times\, and distances vairy from 3.5 to 10.5 hours\, and 2 to 19 km. I have made a detailed itinerary of route options\, with daily distances and grade breakdowns and will send it out as part of the information pack\, just get in touch. We will discuss as a group which option\, we would like to take\, once I know who is interested.  \nFriday the 5th onwards  \nYou can then either head straight home on the 5th or decide head back with me on the 6th. Alternatively there are there are lots of other walking and climbing options in the area\, if you want to stay longer.  \n\nWhat to bring \nA detailed recommended kit list is in the information pack\, just get in touch. The walk is usually tackled in a ‘fast and light’ style\, so a bivvy instead of a tent is recommended and minimal gear for wild walking\, scrambling\, and abseiling will be shared amongst the group.  \n\nServices \nThere is and outdoor shop\, as well as food shops and restaurants in Santa Maria Navarresse.   \n\nAccommodation \nThere are lots of Airbnb options in Santa Maria Navarresse for before and after the walk\, which one we go for will depend on the group size. Bivouacs are the recommended option whilst walking but a light tent is also possible\, if you are willing to carry it.   \n\nFood \nIt is not realistic to carry all the food and water required to complete this trek independently\, as such several outdoor companies in the area offer logistical services. They will drop off food and water for us at our designated camping spot at the end of each day\, either by boat or 4×4. As a group we will need to provide our own food and water packaged and labelled for each day and drop this off with them before we set out.  \n\nTransport \nA hire car is the best way to get to Santa Maria Navarresse\, as well as get around the island after the trek. DESCRIPTION:Join Aine and Matt for a weekend of Sport Climbing and camping on Portland. \n  \nWe will be staying at our favourite spot – Sweet Hill Farm\, which is ideally suited for travel (walk or drive) to either side of the island. DESCRIPTION:This year’s AGM will be hosted (again) by Keith at his home on the Welsh Borders. The venue provides easy access to Snowdonia as well as some local venues for excellent trad\, sport and bouldering. \nArrive Friday for a BBQ and to plan the following day’s activities which are likely to include a full day of trad in the National Park. \nThe AGM will be held on Saturday evening. As ever\, an agenda will be posted by the President\, Vice President and Secretary at least one month before. If you wish to add anything\, then please raise this as early as possible. Then\, your views or discussion points will be included. \nAt this stage\, the plan for Sunday is likely to be a trip to Llangollen where people can choose between trad\, sport and/or bouldering. \nAccommodation: Keith’s place offers a mix of indoor accommodation and plenty of riverside camping. Indoors will be on a first come\, first served basis so book early if you don’t want to camp. There may be a voluntary contribution scheme in place. \nFood: Bring your favourite BBQ food or something to chuck in the Aga. \nServices: Oswestry is 8 miles away which provides everything most people will need. \nTransport: Car is best… Otherwise\, arrive at Gobowen by train or Oswestry by bus and we will pick you up if you give us enough time to coordinate. This would serve as a good introduction to Scottish winter climbing if you haven’t been before. Drive up on Saturday 11th February 2023 and climb Sunday\, Monday and Tuesday before the drive home on Wednesday 15th February 2023. Staying at the SYHA in Aviemore. Winter hill-walking and low grade winter routes available in the Northern Corries. More punchy stuff available too for the experienced.
