SUMMARY:Somerset Spring Trip 2020
DESCRIPTION:Probably arrive at lunchtime to avoid the morning high tide… and plans to approach the red slab area on Brean (Fort Crags). For some it may be a first trip out so we will be climbing in areas offering some good introductory routes. The cliffs here are 10-12m high and are reasonably furnished with holds. A good introduction to trad climbing and a chance to get out on a new venue for the Club.  \nPlans to spend a finishing hour over at Cheddar Gorge. Probably attempt a few sport routes on Arch Rock… the plan to give Jake a chance to practice some sport climbing before we head out to France in the Summer. \nServices: Shops on the road through Weston. \nFood: Bring your own today. \nAccommodation: One day only! \nTransport: Jim driving from the Chew Valley… \n

SUMMARY:Costa Blanca Climbing 2020
DESCRIPTION:Join for as long or as little as you want I will be there from 7 March 2020 until the evening of 14 March 2020\, others may be there on slightly different dates\, doing a mixture of sport climbing with some excellent scrambling thrown in as well. \nCosta Blanca Climbing\, Spain \nCosta Blanca is rightly regarded as one of the best destinations anywhere for winter sun climbing (So the bible says). Benign climate and massive amount of rock available. Cliffs available vary from tiny roadside buttresses\, to long multi-pitch full-day trad routes and ridges (you are better of bringing a small rack for the longer routes\, and ridges). \nClimbing area/ routes / Rockfax / walking  \nThere is climbing for everyone\, every grade\, (mainly sport routes) check out the link and become inspired where you would like to go for adventure :). Accomidation is in Finestrat\, Costa Blanca \nhttps://www.rockfax.com/databases/results_area.html?id=1012 (Note Sella 317 no of routes and sierra de toix 222 no of routes in driving distance from the Orange house where we will be living) I have the Rockfax 2013 guidebook with me on the trip \nDownload mini guides \nhttp://costablancaclimbing.co.uk/mini-guides/ \nIf you want nature then head inland and you will be blown away by the views. Take a drive and you will think you have stepped back in time and take a strill around the villages like Orcheta or Sella. The orange house (the accomidation) do have a walking guide book in the office that you are more than welcome to borrow. \nTransport \nI would recommend (almost to say necessary) to rent a car to get around in the area. Once you get to the climbing venue there is a lot of easy short walk in´s to choose. \nBooking accommodation \nThe Orange House is located in Finestrat\, a small village in the mountains behind Benidorm and a 35 minute drive from Alicante Airport. (To get info about shopping/bars/ restaurants check out link) http://theorangehouse.co.uk/ \n  \nPrice list accomodation:         \n(pppn = per person per night) EUROS \nPrivate 2 person en-suite room from 24 pppn \nPrivate 3 person en-suite room from 19 pppn \nPrivate 4 person en-suite bunkroom from 17 pppn \nPrivate 2 person bunkroom from 16 pppn \nShared 6 person bunkroom from 13 pppn \nCamping from 7 pppn \n  \nBook your stay into The Orange house as soon as possible as they get fully booked very quick. SUMMARY:Thomas's Rjukan 2020 Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join the 2020 Rjukan ice climbing trip. Rjukan offers some of the best European ice climbing. Loads of routes concentrated in the vicinity of Rjukan. It is possible to go skiing at Gaustablik ski resort 30 min drive from the hostel. \nAccommodation: \nRjukan Old School Hostel. I will make reservations for those signed up in the middle of August. I know Jacob who owns the hostel so contact me direct to be included in this booking. Otherwise\, make your own individual booking for the hostel after this time. Address is Rjukan Old School Hostel\, Knut Dahlesvei 31\, 3660 Rjukan\, Norge. \nServices: \nThe hostel has a kitchen and living room. Of course shower\, toilets and sauna. There is a very efficient drying room. The hostel rents out ice axes\, helmets\, crampons and big boots. Get your order in early if you need to. There are shops and banks in Rjukan. Pubs are sparse! Alcohol is sparse and expensive. The Norwegians have very unhealthy alcohol habits! Bring your own if you fancy more than basic beer. \nTravel: \nFlight to Oslo\, Gardamoen Airport\, from there rental cars. Approx 3 hours drive to Rjukan\, but expect winter roads. Don’t fly to the other two Oslo airports as these are hours further from Rjukan. \nFor questions\, please contact Thomas Laursen

SUMMARY:Scottish Winter Trip February 2020
DESCRIPTION:An opportunity to get some traditional Scottish winter climbs in before the race to Rjukan. \nTravel up on Saturday 15th Feb and stay 3 nights\, leaving on Tuesday 18th Feb 2020. \nStaying at Aviemore SYHA Map ref OS 36 (GR893119) telephone no: 01479 810 345 email: aviemore@syha.org.uk \nPlans are to climb in Coire an t-Sneachda\, Coire na Lochain and Hell’s Lum – there are plenty of Grade 1 and 2 climbs\, so good introductory climbs and lots to push the grade. Some big Grade 3\, 4 and 5s as well\, so good stuff for the bold. The walk-ins are quite easy\, a drive up to Cairngorm car park\, then about 1 to 2 hour walk in on reasonably easy ground for the nearest routes. \nThe hostel has kitchens and you can bring your own food. Plenty of shops in Aviemore to buy food if you need to. The Skiing Doo is the cheap bar/restaurant we will go to during the trip and we normally finish off with a big night out at one of the hotel restaurants on the last night (Monday). \nSomething for everyone but there is a focus for those who are planning a first trip to the Alps (August trip to the Ecrins) to get some ice axe and crampon practice in… and maybe some crevasse rescue practice too\, if it doesn’t get in the way of climbing…

SUMMARY:O come all ye faithful!
DESCRIPTION:In time honoured tradition\, we will embark on ye annual Christmas walk in the Peak District on Sunday 22nd December. \nThis year’s trail will be a feast of gritstone gloriousness fit for a King\, or maybe even three. \nWe’ll be following a star\, otherwise known as Dave\, from our meet point at the Grouse Inn at Longshaw\, S11 7TZ. \nPlease arrive promptly for a 9.30am start\, time waits for no man and nor will we. \nOur  journey will take us alongside the line of gritstone edges\, onto White Edge with its far reaching views.  This is an easy promenade -perfect for those delicate post-Christmas shopping feet –  along rocky moorland.  If things go to plan\, we’ll encounter Froggatt village\, Stoke Hall the 17th century retreat of Sir William Cavendish and the biblical texts carved on rocks a little way below Curbar Gap on our way\, before arriving back at our start point where we hope everyone will be welcome at the Inn (that’s the Grouse Inn\, again) for a seasonal snifter. \nGuests can join –  it is Christmas – and as a gesture of respect\, please bring gifts. Chocolate\, mince pies\, hip flasks etc are particularly well received. \nNo such pilgrimage would be complete without some seasonal fancy dress\, so please come equipped to venerate the King in suitable attire. \nOh and finally\, in order to protect the integrity of the BMSCMC walking conglomerate\, rucksacks will be inspected prior to departure and any climbing jiggery pokery will be removed. \nGlory be to the gritstone! \nAli x \n

SUMMARY:Will's Tor-ific South West Trip
DESCRIPTION:So as this trip is happening in October\, in England\, we may have to be a bit flexible with the itinerary\, dependant on weather\, but it’ll definitely be in the South West and plan A is to wild camp on Dartmoor and climb on the Tors. \nMeet Friday night and set up camp near Haytor. Climb here\, or nearby Hound Tor Saturday and head back to the tents for the evening. Break camp Sunday morning and head to the Dewerstone for another days climbing before heading home. Those of you with Classic Rock aspirations will be thinking Climbers’ Club Direct now! \nIf the weather forecast is looking bad for Dartmoor there are various other south west venues we can move the trip to\, such as the North Devon coast\, or Dorset (with the added advantage of being at crash at my place in Dorchester). \nItinerary \nVery flexible… head to Haytor on Friday night and we will take it from there. Stay in touch with Will on the run up to the trip just to keep informed. \nAccommodation \nBring a tent and a sleeping bag. \nServices \nBest to stop off on your journey and be self-sufficient. \n\nOrganiser: Will Beaumont.

DESCRIPTION:The Club’s 2018-19 AGM will be held again at the Carlswark Cottage in Stoney Middleton\, near to lots of Grit and Limestone climbing. The hut belongs to the Derbyshire Pennine Club and will provide a great base for getting out climbing or hiking in the peak district over the course of the weekend. Crags such as Froggatt\, Curbar\, Baslow and Birchen are only a five minutes drive away\, as well as some limestone crags within walking distance of the hut. Details on the hut itself can be found here: http://www.thedpc.co.uk/hut \nWe have booked the hut from Friday 26th April to Sunday 28nd April but there are limited bed spaces so if you want to come along then do get in touch to reserve your spot. The total cost per person for the weekend\, including the accommodation and food\, is £30. \nOn the Saturday evening we will hold the Club’s AGM in the hut and then go to the local pub (across the road) for food to celebrate the year’s mountaineering adventures and plan for the next lot…I will be in touch to get food orders for Saturday night. \nThe usual local amenities of cash point\, shop and petrol station are a short drive from the hut that has parking adjacent to it. \nDon’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions or queries. \nHope to see you all there.

SUMMARY:Fontainbleau Fun in the Forest
DESCRIPTION:Join us for bouldering and walking in the Forêt de Fontainbleau in Spring 2019. In March 2018\, Dave G and Andrew did a recce and are keen to get back for a second visit. It’s not just about the bouldering. The forest is a vast recreational resource\, and cyclists\, runners\, backpackers and families with picnics go there to lose themselves in nature. The bouldering is some of the best in the world with thousands of lumps of sandstone spread across the area. Oh\, and the food and drink are amazing too. \nSee the report of our 2018 visit at: https://bmscmc.org/2018/05/15/fountainbleau-march-2018/ \nEmail Andrew at avicm1954@gmail.com if you want to book a pitch at the campsite. Payment not required in advance. \nAccommodation: Camping La Musardiere\, Routes des Grande Vallées 91490 Milly-la Forêt Tel.: +33 1 64 98 91 91 \nNo website but they do have a Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/Camping-La-Musardi%C3%A8re-158836014184430/ \nThis is a popular site with plenty of space and good facilities. A bakery van visits most mornings with pastries and baguettes. Apart from this\, shopping for food and essentials is in the village or at the hypermarket. Both need vehicle transport\, which we will have. Good restaurants\, shops and bars in the village. \nWe will drive down via Eurotunnel on Wednesday 10th April\, aiming to arrive by early evening. This will give three days of activity before we head back on Sunday morning.

SUMMARY:Jim’s Trip to the Jotunheimen August 2018
DESCRIPTION:An attempt on the highest mountain in Norway\, Galdhopiggen (2469m) taking the northern approach via the Styggebrean Glacier (F). \nMicheal and Jim plan to drive up from Kobenhavn on early on Friday morning\, 03.08.2018 to arrive at the hut for a late lunchtime on Friday. Spend Friday relaxing then an early ascent Saturday morning\, taking in the summit and descent back to the hut. Lunch at the hut then a drive south to the fatherland. \nThe mountain lies in the heart of Norway equidistant from Oslo\, Bergen and Trondheim. Lom is the gateway town for Jotunheimen. Nor-Way has about five buses a day from Oslo which go via Oslo Gardermoen airport. NSB have trains from Oslo to Otto from where there are connecting buses to make the short ride to Lom. Bus times coordinate with train arrival times. From Oslo take the E6 to Otta (308km) then Road 15 to Lom (64km). From Lom take Highway 55 (Sognefjell Mountain Road) and then turn off for either Spiterstulen\, Juvashytta\, or Leirvassbu (for Geitsætre). All are sign-posted. In the summer there are buses that travel along Highway 55 between Lom and Sogndal. \nAccommodation is at the DNT hut Juvashytte (1840). Details available here https://www.ut.no/hytte/3.2380/ \nServices available in the towns listed include shops and banks… Otta and Lillehammer. If you are flying in and travelling by public transport\, then you need to source all resources prior to arrival. \nTo join us on this trip\, you need to be competent at glacier travel\, mountain navigation and have all round Alpine experience. We will be able to fit a competent 4th person onto the rope with the right skills. However\, other than that\, you will be in a team of three. We will join you on the ascent but you need to be safe for yourselves in all aspects of glacier travel and mountaineering. \nAndrew\, Michael\, and Jim will stay in the area for some additional summits and plan to stop off for some Swedish granite climbing on the way back to Copenhagen.  Plans will be a bit fluid\, but members may want to join us for additional climbing.

SUMMARY:The Club’s Memorial Trip for Jon… and the Trip to Snowdonia we all remember…
DESCRIPTION:A chance to stay at Idwal\, climb in Ogwen and Llanberis and for the Club to say goodbye to Jon\, in our own way… \nSome of us will arrive on Thursday\, and climb local to the hostel on Thursday afternoon. Friday is a day for any Club members to get on the rock together. Saturday morning will be spent at Little Tryfan (Tryfan Fach) to climb a crag close to Jon’s heart… His first Welsh climbs\, first multi-pitch experiences and where he first trained for his subsequent Alpine adventures… And a venue he came back to on many occasions with his family. \nJon’s Friends \nAny of Jon’s friends are invited to join us climbing on this morning.. and you are more than welcome to join us socially for the whole of the trip. We will do our best to share a rope and lead you up a climb that Jon climbed in his days with the Club. These climbs are very accessible but may be couple of hundred feet high (though don’t have to be). The venue is easy to access from the bottom and easy to walk off the top.To those who join us on this day who are not members of the Club\, we will manage you to the best of our abilities… which are plentiful\, but please accept that you are responsible for yourself and your family at all times\, if you join us. Please make sure you make your own judgments about what you choose to do\, at all times… \nFor any friends of Jon\, please email Jim so he can sort equipment\, ropes and lead climbers for your climb… If there are any Club members who are happy to help on Saturday and are willing to make a commitment to attend\, either managing a lead or a top rope\, then it would be great to know by email also please. Thanks for this… We want Jon’s friends to see him as we did\, and we want his friends to see the Club as we are\, and this helps. \nClimbing \nPlenty to go at for the Club…learn to climb on Little Tryfan\, big routes on Idwal Slabs\, Milestone Buttress\, the East Face of Tryfan\, the North Face of Glyder Fach\, Suicide Wall and the Kitchen. Further afield\, the Llanberis Pass\, the Snowdon Buttresses or the Carneddeau. \nFor walkers\, plenty of low\, medium and high level routes and scrambles for all ages and abilities. We can suggest walks of all grades. \nFamilies \nFor families\, plenty to keep the kids amused\, from caves and mines to steam engines\, forest paths to mountain biking\, the longest zip wire in the UK\, an underground trampoline with disco lights (highly recommended) or some of the best tea shops in North Wales. \nSame rules as ever\, book yourselves in then sort transport and we will see you there. \nFood and Accommodation  \nFood: Eat and drink at the hostel is the easiest option\, or camp site if you have booked in there. \nJim and Melanie to arrange a cooked meal for all those of us staying at the hostel on the Saturday evening. Please let us know if you are staying there and want to be a part of this. We want you to be\, Club members\, and friends included. \nAccommodation: Hostel accommodation or camping at Idwal YHA (limited! camping just outside the Hostel\, half the price and get to use all the facilities) \, 0845 3719744 http://www.yha.org.uk/hostel/idwal or camping at Gwern Gof Uchaf\, http://www.tryfanwales.co.uk/ (camp site up the valley – nearer to the climbing but less fun). \nShops: At Bethesda\, free cash withdrawals at Tesco Express-Petrol or Betws-y-Coed\, which has multiple services.

SUMMARY:AGM at Stoney Middleton 2018
DESCRIPTION:The Club’s 2017-18 AGM will be held at the Carlswark Cottage in Stoney Middleton\, the same as last year. The hut belongs to the Derbyshire Pennine Club and will provide a great base for getting out climbing or hiking in the peak district over the course of the weekend. Crags such as Froggatt and Birchen are only a five minutes drive away\, as well as some limestone crags within walking distance of the hut. Details on the hut itself can be found here: http://www.thedpc.co.uk/hut \nWe have booked the hut from Friday 20th April to Sunday 22nd April but there are limited bed spaces so if you want to come along then do get in touch to reserve your spot. Avoid disappointment and get booked in early. \nCommunal food will be included for arrival on the Friday night\, breakfast on the Saturday and Sunday mornings as well as snacks etc. for the rest of the stay. The total cost per person for the weekend\, including the accommodation and food\, is £30. \nOn the Saturday evening we will hold the Club’s AGM in the hut and then go to the local pub for food to celebrate the year’s mountaineering adventures and plan for the next lot… \nThe usual local amenities of cash point\, shop and petrol station are a short drive from the hut that has parking adjacent to it. \nDon’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions or queries. \nHope to see you all there.
