These rock don’t climb themselves…
Friday saw the coordinated arrival of several members to the South West…Well done Michael for travelling from Kobenhaven for what turned out to be probably the best trip of the year.
New Club directives meant that Jim collected Emergency Contact details at point of arrival (for those who cared to give it) and the list sat on the table if required… We all met up and visited Ubley Warren Rocks in two cars… James experienced the frustration of parenthood as his responsibilities meant we forgot him… “He’s not in your car? Oh Shit! We forgot Buckley!” He was apparently a bit upset but had got over it by the time he found us. Over 70 ascents Friday night and UWR a good close venue to the Somerset Bunkhouse. BBQ and beer followed.
Saturday took us to Middle Hope Bay on Sand Point. Welcome to Jake as a new member and his first outside lead. Good job. Good climbing all round and well done Smokey Dave on a technical ascent of ‘Fork’ to make a good day. Andrew found Sandweto (VS 4C) to keep his interest (all in his stride!). A later visit to Cheddar and meet up with James and family to get some sport in. A good place to regroup and get photographed by tourists… Oooohhh! (SNAP). We all pulled out some moves.
Saturday night and Kongespil (The King’s Game) meant the throwing of Danish wood became important. We all became good Vikings at least once. More meat on the BBQ and everyone had a good time… some more than most and one found it difficult to leave the garden other than by the shed. Others took a long zig zag to bed. One made a 5m traverse to the garage last 15 minutes and clocked up 175m in the journey… Well Done that guy.
Sunday and an impressive ascent on Avon Gorge by James and Andrew to tick another HRR. Others tried Fairy Cave Quarry and got up the classic RC slab.
Special mention to Poppy and Luna for good climbing.
Weekend finish at the Ring of Bells in Compton Martin. A great pub.
Overall, Somerset has a lot to offer. The Bunkhouse is glad to host and good Somerset weather meant a lot of climbing. You have to find it, and access is generally sensitive, so we tread carefully and check we get it right, but Somerset has a lot of good climbing hidden away and it’s not far! 10 members and no disappointment for a weekend and all agreed that we should return next year.
