Ye Olde Christmas Walk

7 members gathered for this year’s ‘ye olde Christmas walke’ to complete a muddy circuit of 8.5miles around Laxton and Egmanton.  On a gloriously warm winter day, we took a historical mystery tour into some of North Nottinghamshire’s hidden treasures including: the remains of Laxton Castle, medieval fishponds, ancient mounds, 12th century churches, the national holocaust centre and the last remaining working open field system in the UK.

We trudged down the ancient trading path of the Hollow Way which was submerged by water from the deluge of Storm Bella the night before; we slogged around heavily ploughed fields too waterlogged to venture into; we carefully navigated slippery tracks in and out of ditches until a respite came in the form of a grassy, school playing field whereupon we completed the ‘Scream Challenge’ (if you don’t know what it is, join next year). Coffee, tea and lunch were suitably festive with the traditional array of seasonal saturated offerings. It was wet, wild, muddy, Covid safe and a jolly good time was had by all!
