This was our fourth autumn trip to The Lakes in Dave’s quest to complete his second round of Wainwright ascents by more adventurous routes. Given the unpredictability of the weather, sometimes this means just coping with the wind and rain. This was the case on our first day, with all our experience required to traverse the ridge above the south side of Wasdale. In 50 mph winds, you lift your foot and it comes down somewhere else entirely.
Day 2 was entirely different and we were able to explore the hills to the south of our base in Eskdale. It’s a remote rocky landscape with plenty of good scrambling. Only two of the summits were Wainwrights, but it was a great day with dry rough rock, blue skies and sunshine.
After another very wet day, we returned to the hills above Wasdale, this time on the north shore finishing with superb views from Buckbarrow, before heading home. In all, we added 7 Wainies to the list and left with a stack of good memories.
