Thomas Durcan

I first dabbled in climbing when I was in the scouts at the age of 15. After a 6 year hiatus I started going climbing occasionally with our esteemed Vice President whilst at university in Sheffield – mainly indoor bouldering. James and I then both got a job in the Lakes and I was roped (no pun intended) into helping James work his way through the ‘Classic Rock’ routes of the Lakes, which quickly led to me catching the bug.

I was lucky enough to follow James up Little Cham on Shepherds Crag for my first climb, then followed other classics such as Nape’s Needle, Tophet Wall, Troutdale Pinnacle and a very tense Bracket and Slab to name a few. Since then I’ve climbed in Wales, the Peaks and North Yorkshire, branching out to leading the odd route.

I’ve also dabbled in winter/alpine climbing with a trip to Scotland – taking in a couple of gullies on Ben Nevis, and two trips to the Alps – including a failed attempt on Mont Blanc, due to adverse conditions.

I’m currently based in the Lakes which has given me a good knowledge of the rock in the area. Most of my free time is spent out making the most of the mountains, be it road cycling, running and swimming (and occasionally combining the three into the odd triathlon).

Favourite Scramble: Sharp Edge (a good trail run)
Favourite Climb: Moss Ghyll Grooves (when it’s in condition)
Favourite Winter Climb: Cheré Couloir
Favourite Alpine Route: Cosmique Arête
