Scottish Winter 2020 Trip Report

A few of us headed North with a stopover in Manchester to break the driving and arrived at Aviemore, with enough time to catch a decent late lunch at the Skiing Doo. Some things don’t change. Sunday brought high winds and the road was closed so a long walk up to the middle car park and we managed some winter skills. Monday bought slightly lower winds and a considerable avalanche forecast so, although we could drive up, there wasn’t any way over the tops and all aspects in the Northern Corries were not healthy. We walked into Coire an t-Sneachda just to be sure. It was beginning to look like a wasted trip…

However, on the walk out, we got talking and were pointed towards Twin Ribs, a Grade II mixed route on the right of the entrance to Coire an t-Sneachda. We came back prepared on Tuesday and got a great day. The route gives Grade I variations if you want to take the ice and snow on the left or right. The rocks on the direct line give a well-protected Grade II with good belays, and plenty of them. A one star route but it rescued us from a wasted trip and we felt good we got it in.

Hope you enjoy the pictures!

Jim
